Discovered by William Herschel in 1785.
Open cluster NGC 2204 was discovered on February 6, 1785 by William Herschel, who included it in his catalog as H VII.13. However, in the appendix of his first deepsky catalog, William confused this cluster with H VII.12 (NGC 2360) and erroneously attributed its discovery to his siter Caroline Herschel as of February 26, 1783.
